English: Shingle Banks Strictly speaking, it's not shingle because the component stones of these ridges are cobbles washed up by successive high tides. The angular blocks in the foreground have been placed there to try to avert erosion by the sea, but at the moment the water's edge is several tens of metres away, so for the present they are unnecessary. There's a struggling sycamore just in front of the camera, but unfortunately the shingle is being colonised by Japanese knotweed, an invasive introduced species. |
