I last visited the Three Stags Heads in w:Wardlow Mires over 20 years ago. Back then it was the front room of a farm house; a small stone flagged room with a cast iron range, whitewashed walls, a small bar and a couple of rickety tables and chairs. It was as you imagined a farmhouse might be 200 years ago. The only ornament in the place was a glass display case containing the mummified carcass of a dead cat! The pub has now changed hands, but I was delighted to find that the interior has changed, not one bit - even the cat remains. The pub is a bit like the pub in American Werewolf in London. As you walk through the ancient front door, the room goes quiet and one senses that strangers are not exactly welcomed. It's quite an experience and one I'd recommend, especially as the ale is both cheap and well kept. There's a sign on the wall stating: Please do not ask for lager as a smack in the gob often offends - a true real ale pub! |
