ich melts as it werein the general colour of the plumage. The thighs are dark brown in front and spotted behind,like the rest of the plumage. The vent and under tail-co-verts are pure white; the upper tail-coverts pure black. Thewings are black, slightly reflecting blue, the lesser wing-coverts with triangular spots, the larger the same, but withmuch smaller spots. The larger quill-feathers have only a small triangular spotfrom the sixth to the twelfth feather, towards the tip ; andthe black of the feathers becomes dusky at the tip. Theinner or under wing feathers have an oval white spot on theinner web of the fifth to the eighth quill-feather. The underwing coverts are dusky with triangular white spots on theirtips ; the tail is black with slight blue reflections and whiteends, narrow on the middle feather, but enlarging to nearlyone inch on the outer feather. The female differs very little from the male in colouring,but there are varieties of the Nutcracker which are quitewhite. 133

Of this singular and beautiful family, eight species areenumerated by Temminck as belonging to Europe; fouronly of these are met with in England, of which the speciesunder present consideration is the most rare. The Great Black Woodpecker is an inhabitant of thecold as well as the temperate parts of Europe, but does notpenetrate very far north, in consequence of the absence oflarge trees beyond a certain latitude. Russia in Europe,and Asia, Persia, France, some parts of Switzerland andGermany are inhabited by this bird. It is also found inNorth America, Chili, and Porto Rico. Although nowhereplentiful, this bird is scattered over the wooded parts ofNorthern Europe, it is more rare in the central parts, and inthe most southern countries is nearly unknown. The favourite haunts of the Black Woodpecker are theextensive forests of pine that cover so much of NorthernEurope and Asia. T
