Text Appearing Before Image: intensely red, cedema-tous and swollen. On the soft palate and uvula wasan extensive white necrotic adherent membrane giv-ing the appearance of a severe diphtheria. Thetongue was badly coated and the mucous membraneof the entire mouth red. Salivation was present. Onthe gums, the usual place of predilection for mer-curial stomatitis, there was no membrane or ulcera-tion. The temperature was only slightly raised. The patient deceived her parents and physiciansabout her having taken mercury. The diagnosis ofdiphtheria was made and the patient was sent to thedepartment for infectious diseases in the hospital.The slight fever and the good general condition ofthe patient did not agree with the severe local mani-festations. The Klehs-Loffler bacillus was sought foragain, but not found. Later on distinct swelling ofthe border of the gums appeared, which indicated themercurial poisoning. From the appearance of the le-sion the first diagnosis (diphtheria) was justified. 178 Plate XXVII. There was a marked burning sensation andcongestion and swelling of the mucous membrane.The tongue was swollen and its surface became rough:bulls, which soon ruptured, formed upon the lips andgums. The mucous membrane of the tongue fell topieces, especially on the base of the tongue, whichwas denuded of epithelium. The anterior part of thetongue was markedly coated. After using camomiletea as a mouth wash, healing began in a few days. Thepatient said that some years previously, after takingantipyrin, he developed bullae in his mouth, but theattack was not so severe as this one.
