Paintings from South India

These two pages are from a sacred manuscript, and both have been painted on high-quality laid paper imported from Europe, though they are presented in the traditional Indian horizontal format. The two-part painting above is dedicated to the Hindu god of creation, Brahma. At the left he is shown in his eternal form, with four heads, seated on the lotus flower from which he was born; he was the first being generated in the creation of the universe. On the right he is shown seated on his vehicle, the swan, receiving supplication from an ascetic in the mountains.

The churning of the Ocean of Milk is a scene from primeval time, prior to the creation of humans, when only gods and demons inhabited the cosmos. Wishing to extract the nectar of immortality, the gods (grouped on the right) and demons (on the left) churn the primordial Ocean of Milk using Mt. Mandara as the rod and a serpent as the rope. Vishnu in his tortoise incarnation supports the mountain and prevents it from sinking.
