I have been contributing what ever I could for the Tamil wikipedia project (http://ta.wikipedia.org). Mostly related to computers.

There are a lot of things to update and its been quite a challenge. Even, Java section is yet to be fully filled up (given the fact so many of us work in that platform).

It would be great if everyone can give their two cents towards enriching Tamil. Some of the things i learnt -> virtual (MeiNigar - மெய்நிகர்), programming (NiRalaakkam - நிரலாக்கம்), Operating System (iyanguthaLam - இயங்குதளம்)

Some of the words that are not available are, Compiler/Compilation, Portable/Portability. For example, you cannot possibly explain Java without explaining portability. :(

If you have any idea about the Tamil meaning of these words, do reply.

Vijay:

Executables can run, so we can call them as “Odi” (as in, naadodi). Compilers make executables that run, so they are x? (What you call the one (compiler), who makes things that run (executable/odi)?). Odikaaran? Couldn’t guess further. :(

“Portable” means that “something that can be carried”. Portable programming language means that a programming language that can be carried (moved) to another platform. “Portable” is more related to “move” than “carry”.

You can translate as follows.

Java is portable language – Java [elithaga] nagarakoodiya moli

In Tamil a compilation is called "thirattu" as in "PaaMaalai Thirattu". We can call it "Thiratti" :) but its awfully ridiculous. We need a good name.

"Nagarudhal" is being "mobile". We need to differentiate between Mobile and Portable. Mobile phone is defined as "NagarPesi" in Wiktionary.

I think, no need to differentiate between portable and mobile. Both are used in the meaning of “move”. You can not move/carry along your landline phone with you. You can not move executables (.class) other than java to another platform and run there. That translation (Java is portable language – Java [elithaga] nagarakoodiya moli) is simple and exactly means what it supposed to mean.

In Tamil, we can make a word mean more than one way (called “pala porul oru moli”) or, we can also do the reverse (oru porul pun moli).

For compiler “Thiratti” is also fine. How about “maatri” (change) / “peyarpi”/”peyarpaan” (translate – moli peyarpu)?

Make things simple. For cell phone, “pesi” is more than enough. Why NagarPesi or kaipeci? How to mean “A geographic area or zone surrounding a transmitter in a cellular telephone system”?!
